Which ABC Mix in India Has No Added Sugar? We Checked 6 Ingredient Labels
Apple, Beetroot, Carrot, three simple ingredients that should make up an ABC mix. So why do most ABC powders in India contain jaggery, palm sugar, malt extract, or cane sugar? We bought and researched 6 popular ABC mix brands and read every ingredient label carefully. Only one had zero added sugar of any kind. Only one told us exactly how their ingredients are processed. Here's what we found.
What Actually Matters in an ABC Mix?
The health value of an ABC mix comes from specific compounds, betalains in beetroot, beta-carotene in carrot, and polyphenols in apple. Two things destroy these before they reach you:
- High-temperature drying destroys up to 80% of vitamin C and significantly degrades betalains. Beetroot turns dull brownish-pink, a visible sign that nutrients are gone.
- Jaggery, palm sugar, cane sugar, all raise blood glucose. "No refined sugar" or "no white sugar" on the front label does not mean zero added sugar.
- Does the brand list exact ingredient percentages? Do they disclose their processing method? These are the signs of a brand that has nothing to hide.
The "No Refined Sugar" Trap
Many ABC mix brands print "no refined sugar" or "no white sugar" on the front of their pack. This sounds clean, but it's misleading. The following are all forms of added sugar commonly found in ABC mix powders that still raise blood glucose:
- Palm Sugar/ Cane Sugar/ Brown Sugar/ Coconut Sugar
- Jaggery/ Cane Jaggery/ Palm Jaggery/ Organic Jaggery
- Malt Extract
What ABC Mix Labels Actually Say
Brand 1 — ABC Latte Mix
Ingredients: Apple, Beetroot, Carrot, Pure Jaggery Powder, Palm Sugar
MAIVYA ABC Health Mix
Added Sugar on nutrition label: 0g. No jaggery. No palm sugar. No cane sugar. No sweetener of any kind. No milk powder. Every ingredient listed with exact percentages, full transparency.
Apple, Beetroot, Carrot, and Ginger are processed using Vita-Drying, a room temperature method that preserves nutrients. The label states it directly: "Sun-Dried = Nutrients Loss. Vita-Dried = Nutrients Preserved." No other brand in this comparison discloses how they process their ingredients.
The beetroot stays deep red, not the dull brownish-pink of heat-processed powders. That color means the betalains are intact. MAIVYA also includes Makhana (low GI, high protein, anti-inflammatory) and Ginger for digestion functional additions no other brand in this list includes.
